How much does a cruise really cost
Transparency without hidden payments
We’ll break down the cruise cost into details: from base fare to mandatory gratuities and expenses ashore.
Cruise pricing often seems confusing: promotional banners promise minimum amounts, but during booking the final price increases. We have prepared an honest breakdown of how the price of a trip is formed and what costs you should actually count on.
What determines the cost of a cruise
Destination and season of travel
Popular regions during peak periods (for example, the Mediterranean in summer or the Caribbean for New Year) cost significantly more. Traveling in the so-called "shoulder season" (May, September-October) allows you to get better cabins at a much more comfortable rate with the same quality of service.
Type of selected cabin
The difference between an inside cabin (no window), an oceanview cabin, a balcony, or a spacious suite can be multiple. An inside cabin is a great option for those who plan to use it only for sleeping, while a balcony gives unforgettable private sunrises at sea.
Cruise line class
Cruise lines are divided into budget, family, premium, and ultra-luxury. They differ in the level of gastronomy, the ratio of staff to guests, the range of free entertainment, and the overall atmosphere on board.
Number of passengers in the cabin
Base rates are calculated based on double occupancy. When traveling solo, a single supplement applies, and when accommodating a 3rd or 4th passenger (e.g. children), cruise lines often offer large discounts or promotional rates.
Port fees and mandatory expenses
This is an integral part of the cost, which is not always indicated in the first advertising rate. This includes government port fees, environmental taxes, and a service charge (gratuities for staff) charged daily per guest.
What's included
Fine dining and service without extra costs
Additional costs on board and on land
These services are usually not included in the basic ticket and are paid separately:
Service charge (staff gratuities)
Paid daily
Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage packages
Paid separately
Shore excursions and transfers
Paid separately
Satellite internet on board (Wi-Fi)
Paid separately
SPA center services, massages, and saunas
Paid separately
Dinners in specialized a la carte restaurants
Paid separately
Why you shouldn't focus only on the minimum rate?
The smallest print in advertising often hides a "clean" fare without port fees, taxes, and tips. In addition, a basic budget ticket may not include beverage packages, internet, and shore excursions, which are purchased separately if necessary. We recommend calculating the full cost of a "turnkey" trip before payment to avoid unexpected expenses on board.
